Another season of indoor track has begun. Boardwalk RC sent a team of 11 athletes to the Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University to race in the York Xmas Open. The youth portion the meet takes place in the morning followed by university competition in the afternoon. Fun fact, this was the 15th anniversary of the meet, and Coach Semes ran in the 2001 and 2002 instalment while competing for York.
The meet offered only 3 distances, the 50m, the 800m and the 200m in that order. As well as shot put and long jump.
Young tyke boy Cole Malcolm made his debut for Boardwalk RC by running all 3 races in quick succession. He didn't even look tired in his 3rd race, the 200m. At the end of that race he ran the final 50m fast enough to pass the leader and win the heat.
Another runner with a late surge was atom Dominic Temple. He out kicked his competition from 100m out to lean over the line victorious in the 800m. Closely following him in that race was newcomer Jackson McQuade, who finished 3rd in his first race for Boardwalk RC.
Atom Fiona Pavlovska won the girls 800m race. Charlie Pilz won a close tyke 800m race followed by his team mates Charlie Mills and William Gray on the podium, and the young tyke Cole in 5th.
William Gray would go on to add a second place finish in he 200m shortly after his 800m race. This was also his first indoor meet.
Also making their first appearance at an indoor meet were atoms Liam McCullagh, and Bridgette Paisley. Both showed they had speed in the 200m, and we are looking forward to making improvements all season long.
Trying something a bit different for a 200m runner was atom Charlotte Melnyk, who competed in Shot Put. She really enjoyed the experience and remarked at how friendly and helpful the people around the throwing cage are. She put the shot 4.64m away from the circle and will be working towards a throw of 5m the next time she tries it.
Boardwalk RC had great results, including three 1st places; two 2nd places; two 3rd places; three 4th places; and three 5th places. Hard work is paying off.
