Congratulations to our recently crowned Provincial and Canadian Masters Champions!
The Provincial Masters Championships were held at York University on Mar 10th. 4 athletes competed in 7 events. The 800m was contested by Mark Duff (M50) and Tanya Sakharov (W30) both of whom ran their way to titles. Mark in 2:31.96 and Tanya in 2:37.18. In the 1500m, 3 athletes toed the line. Mark, Tanya and Jimmy Semes (M35). Mark ran a time just over 5minutes (5:08.35) and earned a bronze medal. Tanya continued her gold streak with a 5:29.42 performance in her 1500m race. Jimmy Semes ran 5 seconds faster then his seed time, and took the championship in a time of 4:40.88. Boardwalk RC also entered 2 athletes in the 3000m. Both earned medals. John C. Healy (M50) took silver in 10:47.59, and Jimmy ran for bronze in a time of 10:15.83. It was a short turn around to the Canadian Masters Championships also held at York a week later on March 15th and 16th. This time Boardwalk entered athletes in the 800m and 3000m. Jimmy Semes ran in both events. He finished the 800m in 2nd, his time was his best this season (2:12.65). After finishing 3rd in the province over 3000m, it was a surprise win for Jimmy in the race. He bettered his season best time and finished in 10:15.24. Also in the 3000m was John C. Healy. A difference of 6 seconds separated John from the gold in what was a tightly packed field for a 3k race. His time of 10:36.18 was good for 4th, an although he was disappointed with the result, it was an 11 second improvement from the week before. Hopefully, John will return from hip surgery healthy and fast. Provincial 800m Champion Tanya Sakharov made it a provincial/national double. She ran a well paced race, and finished with her now trademark kick to catch a field of runners. Her time of 2:33.55 was a 4 second improvement from the week before. Boardwalk athletes were peaking just right. Mark Duff, also in the 800m, won silver and trimmed 2 seconds off his provincial 800m time; he finished in 2:29.28. Boardwalk RC is always looking to recruit more Masters runners. If you or someone else is interested in racing this summer, contact [email protected].
