From the start of September, Boardwalk athletes have been climbing so many podiums at a number of cross country races that you might mistake them for climbers instead of runners. Here are some of the highlights.
At the first MTA meet that the Durham Dragons hosted, Peewee Evelyn Thomson raced to a win in a co-ed race and set a meet record. Her sister Grace won the Mite girls race, and the Atom boys and girls and Senior boys took first place team awards led by Alexandra Mills' 3rd place, Ty Machado's race victory and Charlie Mills' 3rd place respectively. In Highschool racing, our new grade 9 athletes started strong. They have each had 3 or 4 races already. Charlie Mills has placed 2nd on 2 occasions, Lucy Carpenter has had three 2nd places so far, and likely could have won a race if not for being led off course. Illix Machado has finished as high as 4th, and so has Emma Molloy, and Charlie Pilz has been getting stronger, his best result so far has been 7th. All the boys mentioned above have strong high school teams, and may be facing each other down the line at OFSAA if everything goes right. The club also sent strong groups to the Dempsters Global Energy Run 10k and the Don Olson Classic. At Dempsters, Boardwalk athletes made up 5 of the top 10 positions. Clarence Hung led the way with a 2nd place in 35:29, he is currently gearing up to beat his 2:38 marathon PB. Sam Shi 5th 37:07; Charlie Mills 6th 38:44; Jimmy Semes 8th 39:33; Alic Webster 9th 39:51, round out the top 10 results. At Don Olson the club showed up with our biggest group yet. The competition was fun, and many awards were won, but most people showed up for the great times after the race at our team BBQ. Elementary School results are always exciting. 34 Boardwalk athletes have qualified for the South Conference Final taking place this Thursday. To qualify a runner had to be in the top 30 or on a top 4 team. 30 of the Boardwalk athletes qualified in the top 10 and half of that in the top 3! We had 3 first round Champions, 5 Silver medalists and 7 Bronze medalists. Winners were grade 8 Jamie Parkin, Grade 7 Aengus Adams, and Grade 6 Alexandra Mills. On Thursday there will be some great races loaded with our athletes; the Grade 6 boys race will feature 6 Boardwalk runners; and in each of the grade 5 girls, grade 7 girls and boys, and the grade 8 girls races their will be 4 Boardwalk competitors. If you can be there to watch, you will be treated to great racing. Good Luck to all our athletes competing in Finals this week at High School and Elementary races. Your hard work is making us proud.
