Another season of indoor track has begun. Boardwalk RC sent a team of 11 athletes to the Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University to race in the York Xmas Open. The youth portion the meet takes place in the morning followed by university competition in the afternoon. Fun fact, this was the 15th anniversary of the meet, and Coach Semes ran in the 2001 and 2002 instalment while competing for York. The meet offered only 3 distances, the 50m, the 800m and the 200m in that order. As well as shot put and long jump. Young tyke boy Cole Malcolm made his debut for Boardwalk RC by running all 3 races in quick succession. He didn't even look tired in his 3rd race, the 200m. At the end of that race he ran the final 50m fast enough to pass the leader and win the heat. Another runner with a late surge was atom Dominic Temple. He out kicked his competition from 100m out to lean over the line victorious in the 800m. Closely following him in that race was newcomer Jackson McQuade, who finished 3rd in his first race for Boardwalk RC. Atom Fiona Pavlovska won the girls 800m race. Charlie Pilz won a close tyke 800m race followed by his team mates Charlie Mills and William Gray on the podium, and the young tyke Cole in 5th. William Gray would go on to add a second place finish in he 200m shortly after his 800m race. This was also his first indoor meet. Also making their first appearance at an indoor meet were atoms Liam McCullagh, and Bridgette Paisley. Both showed they had speed in the 200m, and we are looking forward to making improvements all season long. Trying something a bit different for a 200m runner was atom Charlotte Melnyk, who competed in Shot Put. She really enjoyed the experience and remarked at how friendly and helpful the people around the throwing cage are. She put the shot 4.64m away from the circle and will be working towards a throw of 5m the next time she tries it. Boardwalk RC had great results, including three 1st places; two 2nd places; two 3rd places; three 4th places; and three 5th places. Hard work is paying off. results can be found here: http://www.trackie.com/track-and-field/Results/2015-15th-annual-york-xmas-open/4607/

Santa's coming to town and we have got to get out of his way! The Boardwalk RC youth and parent's got together on Sunday, November 15th to help support the Santa Claus Parade in Toronto. In this race which is now 3 years old, participants get to run on the same course as the parade. As a bonus, athletes are treated to cheers from crowds that are 5 rows deep throughout the route. Boardwalk RC youth have been making this a tradition. They are also making fast times a tradition! Three of them ran the 5km race in under 20 min! And all of our times and places were in the top few for our age groups. Coach Semes led for a portion of the race, until drifting back into 5th place. Time 18:24. Last year he was 3rd. Fiona Pavlovska (12yr old) was 15th overall, 3rd female overall, 1st in her age, and ran under 20min for 5k for the first time. Her time was a remarkable 19:36. Charlie Mills (10yr old) continues to add sub 20min 5k's to his resume, finishing 19th, 1st in his age, in a time of 19:46. Dominic Temple (12yr old) ran his first sub 20min 5k sparing only a single second, finishing 19:59. Good for 24th and first in his age. His teammate Liam was second to him in that category and 32nd overall. His time was also very close to the magical sub 20 number, 20:37. Coach Jo finished in 22:04, also first in her age. After the run, it was time for traditional parade watching from the best seats in the house at Jack Astor's. We were joined by many club members for a great lunch. Looking forward to keeping the tradition alive in 2016! Check out the rest of the results here. http://www.chiptimeresults.com/resultsreader.php?y=2015&r=hollyjollyS.htm When winter came Boardwalk RC used to back their bags and head south. Okay not that far south to be fair, but it was tradition that the masters would head down to Niagara Falls to run the YMCA Festival of Lights 5k. The last such trip took place November 19th, 2005. So head Master Al Baigent thought it was about time to bring back a great tradition. On November 13th, 9 of the club's masters runners and their support staff (family members) headed down to Niagara Falls once again. After a night at the falls, a team dinner at Boston Pizza where we planned our race domination, and a trip to the Hershey store to get some extra carbo-loading, the team tucked into bed with thoughts of tomorrows 5km race. The race was Lindsays Legacy 5k in Tonawanda. (www.lindsays5k.com for info and results). It was hosted at a 19th century bicycle club in the heart of town, and wound it's ways along the bicycle path by the river. We were excited from the start at how full our race kit was with useful and varied items. Everyone received an umbrella, and model motorcycles among other things. And the post race spread of food was top notch, complete with pizza, pasta, salad, cookies and cake. Our 9 runners did very well. 6 placed in the top three of their age categories and came home with some medals to declare at the border. Results. 10. Dave Corlett 17:42 2nd/M45-49 18.
